add edits on in and out in one keystroke?

No keystroke in FCP to do that, but what do you want to do after you’ve made the cuts? Lift? You don’t need to make the cuts, just press Delete. Ripple Delete? Shift-Delete. If you just want to make the Add Edits and leave them there, there’s no keystroke for it. But again, if you tells us what you’re trying to do there might be a different way to do it in FCP.

What I was trying to do specifically was in the audio…I was taking a cussword and reversing the clip…adding edit to isolate it, then reverse the clip…

I would use this in other applications to add an effect to a specific part of a clip…it would be convenient.

No, you can’t do it they way you want. Perhaps though when you go to the point where you want to make the first cut, rather than pressing I to mark in the point, press Control-V to cut the clip. Go to the out point and rather than press O use Control-V again. If you want a one keystroke tool I prefer to map / to the Add Edit function, which splits the clips at the playhead.

If you want to add an effect only to a specific part of a clip then you should use the range select tool (ggg) … click and drag to select the range, then add your effect to the selection

I don’t think he can do the reverse speed thingie that way. I think for that he has to split the clip.

I had NO idea there was a “range selector” feature for adding effects to a specific part of a clip…I’ll play with that.

As far as this function I was trying…I’ve already completed the video, just wanted to know if there was an easier way.

I agree Tom, I wasn’t suggesting otherwise (unless of course one is using a reverse speed filter, like G Reverse, rather than FCP’s built-in speed controls) … my point was specifically to Jason’s note that he would find the ability to add effects to a portion of a larger clip useful, and I was explaining how he could achieve that without splitting the clip

If you’re really just applying an effect, like a filter, if the area is selected with I/O the way it is in your first image, then simply going to the Effects menu and selecting the filter will apply it to that portion of a clip or that portion the timeline.
