  • Add all regions from trimmer to timeline AND/OR One-click Multi-Trim in Timeline

Posted by Jill Simpson on February 20, 2009 at 6:48 pm

I want to watch a media file, select parts I want to keep, then cut/trim everything else.

We can do this in the trimmer, in an indirect way:
Create regions, save them to the source media file, then in the Explorer, with the Region view enabled, find the file (may take some time), and drag one or more clips to the timeline.
Is there a way to do this directly – add all regions from the trimmer to the timeline?

Can we do this in the timeline?
Again, we can do so indirectly:
I can create regions, then run the script ‘Regions to Subclips’, then pull the scripts into the timeline, but unless your region names are numbered chronologically, the subclips may well be out of order. (You can ‘lay out using media timecode’ but that leaves gaps in un-region-ed parts. You can lay out using date time/stamp, but some capture programs don’t record date/time stamps, such as the default Windows Video Importer that loads when I connect my camera.)
Is there a way to multi-trim directly?

I know there are related methods:

I can split at each selection start and end, and delete the unwanted parts, but for cutting several sections this would be a slow process.

Ctrl-T trims everything in an event except the one selection area, which is no good if you want to retain several sections.

    Hi Jill ~

Maybe Edward Troxel’s Excalibur tool is what you are after.

In effect it has timeline ‘multitrim’ as you like to define it. ‘Under Excalibur’s ‘timeline tab’ it allows you to select any number of regions on a timeline and do a number of things with them. By using the ‘Extract Good Clips’ option it can now put all your region selections on a new timeline. Chronologically in order side by side with or without gaps above your original long clip with the further sub-options of leaving the original timeline clip uncut or actually leaving gaps in it.

There is also a sub-option to create subclips at the same time. I find the latter great because once I have culled through my camera reels, created regions and named or numbered them I create a new folder in the ‘project media’ dock and run the ‘extract good clips’ option.

Doing as described above you will end up with a timeline with all your new selections in chronological order plus a folder with all your newly defined clips with their new names/numbers etc. Worth having a look at. A fifteen day demo is available on Edward’s site at:

    Good luck!

    Thanks Chris,
Yes – that sounds perfect. I have not yet explored any Vegas extensions. While they obviously give helpful tools, I was trying to avoid the extra complexity of knowing how to make full use of these tools. But yes, the functionality you described is what I seek.

    Jill ~

Good to hear. Jill, I don’t recall seeing you posting on this board back over the last couple of years so you might not be aware as to who Edward Troxell is and what he means to the Vegas community. Edward used to be a major contributor on this forum but has taken more of a back seat these days. Anyone who has any of his scripts and plugins/tools would I think testify to just how good his Vegas enhancements are. Whilst Excalibur is not a free tool I found the money spent on it to be well worth it. I describe about 1% of what Excalibur can do to speed up and simplify your whole edit workflow.

    Happy cutting!

Jill, Ultimate S Pro can do the same as Excalibur. You could trim all of the media outside of the regions or markers and optionally ripple them to remove any gaps caused by the trimming all with one push of a button. You would be left with a timeline ready to edit.

Before you purchase either tool, I would download the free trial of both Ultimate S Pro and Excalibur and see which one fits your workflow better.

In the interest of full disclosure, myself and Douglas Spotted Eagle are the authors of Ultimate S Pro.

[John Rofrano] “Ultimate S Pro can do the same as Excalibur but with less clicks”

    Hmmm… Excalibur takes 1 click. 😉

    John R ~

Yes, my description might have sounded like a hundred clicks but once you have selected your permutation of options as to what you want to achieve as Ed says ‘one click’… bit hard to be less than that 🙂

    Cheers
