I am brand new to digital editing (it’s been over 25 years since I have worked in the business). I shot a 2-camera video that needs to be edited together. It was shot in studio with a professional audio track (radio show). I had one camera set up stationary and one I panned and zoomed for cutaways. I want to lay down the stationary track with the station’s audio track (and sync them), then add cutaways from the other camera.

I have been watching all the online tutorials, along with reading the manual that came with the Canon disk. But I can’t figure out how to sync the audio track nor get the cutaways in. I have all my files in the media bins (sorted correctly), and the audio track is laid down below the stationary file. There are 4 files with each one (4 segments to complete the show).

Can anyone help as we want to place the 4 parts on YouTube so the client can add them to his Facebook and LinkedIn pages. This will be an ongoing project.

If you right click on the video track header you will have the option to ‘insert video track’. I think this is what you are after?

    Similarly with audio tracks.

That allows me to add a physical track. But I am confused as to how to sync it up with the original one in there. And then, how do I flip back and forth between the two? Each segment is about 10 minutes long. I need to be able to have the 2 intermingle back and forth between each other.

Since this was my first try in years, I forgot to use a clapboard (I will remember next time).

And I haven’t been able to figure out how to sync up the audio tracks. In the old days you just spun the knobs, listened to the sound, checked the counter (if you had it), and you were golden. Of course it was a little more difficult than that, but at least I knew how to do it…

Thanks for any help you can offer. I really thought the online video tutorials would help, but they are really lacking in putting together something as simple as this.

Hmmm. If I understand you correctly you should have two (pretty) identical audio tracks, one under the other. It is a bit trial and error from here. Expand the tracks lengthways (using your mouse wheel if you have one) so that you can see the waveform better. Now look for a peak in one track that you can line up visually with the same peak in the second track.
NB. Make sure ‘ripple editing’ is off.
You can toggle the audio on and off on the top track using the ‘mute’ button in the track headers (the circle with the diagonal through it). This way you get a good idea as to how well synced they are.
Once they are playing nicely together, and again with ripple turned off, simply split (cut) the events and delete the sections you don’t want i.e. splicing. This part is very simple 🙂
