  • AC3 codec for Vegas? And why is mp3 limited to a low frequency?

Hi! I know Vegas Pro 9 comes with AC3 when using AVC for export, but as i’ve mentioned i like to use FFDshow to make smaller files. However, i just made a clean install now, and i *really* don’t want to have to use codec packs. I know where to find FFDshow, but is an AC3 encoder available as a separate download? I can’t choose the AC3 encoder that comes with Vegas when exporting to a format like FFDshow. I did find a ac3encode.dll at sourceforge which i’m sure is 100% legal, but i didn’t manage to install it. Not under Vista anyway. So does anyone know about a separate installer?

Also… i’ve never understood this and Vegas isn’t the only program that does this… (my DAW never has this problem though) if i choose mp3 for the audio export, it only let me choose up to 22.05 khz. Why is that?? Every other audio format lets me use pretty much any setting. If i don’t get AC3 working with FFDshow i’m left with uncompressed audio which takes a lot of unnecessary room… i’m at a los here, so help me out if you can!

Sorry I can’t help you with AC3 and FFDShow. I don’t use FDDShow.

My Vegas Pro 9.0e allows me to save MP3 files as high as 320Kbps at 48,000 Hz 16Bit Stereo. I’m not sure why you can’t but I keep my system pretty clean.

OK thanks, i’ll try to keep it clean and install everything in the right order; i should get it working. I have before, but using those codec packs that people don’t seem to like. They don’t always work for me either.

I made as clean install as possible; installing every possible windows update before Vegas (not sure it matters, but that’s what i did). i got AC3 working for all video formats – using the good ol’ Klite pack.

I get everything working now, but i’ve been unable to duplicate the “ffdshow” files i made that had just 1/4 of the AVC files. But there’s so many settings, maybe i’ll figure it out. Meanwhile, i admit that AVC is a stable and trusty format to export to.
