about 25% of the clips don’t reconnect properly!
When I backup or move my project and all the footage from one drive to another, I have to reconnect the media when I open the project. That is fine but somehow some of the clips won’t reconnect properly. Some random footage is put in its place even when I go to the specific clip in question and try to reconnect just that clip. Anybody know why this happens? Is it a problem with the timecode, ie. if there is a break in the timecode during when it was shot?
The footage by the way was shot on miniDV.

it’s hard to say specifically. When you move your project media, is there other media on the target drive? Are you keeping media relavant to a project in discreet folders? Your problem sound initially like FCP is finding media with the same name and connecting to that…. as in, you have several projects worth of media on a drive, with similar clip names for some of your media, and the automatic find is grabbing the wrong pieces. Assuming that all your media is in a single capture scratch folder, once you reconnect one clip, “automatically reconnect all clips in folder” should work fine.

OK, I’m curious. Are these clips that were captured with “Capture Now” as opposed to clips that were logged & batch captured? They wouldn’t be named “Untitled”, would they?

I have all the rushes well organzied and labeled in a discrete folder and I specify exactly where it is in the reconnect dialog box. I’ve even tried to reconnect just the individual problem clips. It reconnects to the media in my project but does wierd stuff like speeds it up and connects at different points rather than just to the in and out as specified by the clip.

They are all named but i wasn’t the one who did the actual capturing.

Yes, but named what?? If the names are the same, then it’s not FCP’s fault. That would be an “operator error”, as they (we?) say.

Clips captured using capture now often come out called “Untitled1”, “Untitled2”, “Untitled3” etc. And the tape name if not specified is “001”. A lot of people have a habit of sticking a tape, opening L & C and doing capture now without specifying any names. And without saving the project first. So the folder in Capture scratch is called “Untitled Project 1”.
They then rename clips in FCP, but outside FCP the Quicktime files are still called “Untitled1”, “Untitled2”, “Untitled3” etc. And stored in folders called “Untitled Project 1”, “Untitled Project 2” etc. Over time, there are tonnes of clips with the same names this way and FCP gets confused.The other thing is folder paths. It is not uncommon to see Capture Scratch at the root of a drive and one inside a folder called “Final Cut Pro documents”. And some at other locations as people often specify other paths for scratch disk.
So search all your drives for “Untitled” and for “Capture Scratch” and folders by the same name as the current project media folder. If you find more than one of these, then that is your problem.
