  • Able to view HDV tapes in DVCAM deck but no TC?

I’m a bit new to the whole HDV revolution, so bare with me lol.

I have a bunch of tapes from a director. They’re all mini-dv tapes. I assumed he shot these on a normal DV NTSC camcorder (e.g. PD-150). After flipping through some of the messy continuity notes some of them had “HDV” mentioned by the camera name. So I began to think these might’ve been shot in HDV-mode, which would be an issue because I don’t have access to an HDV deck.

So I popped these into a Sony DVCAM playback deck (an ‘old’ model). Surprisingly, the tapes played back fine (video and audio). But there was no timecode. On my deck display, it had “U-Bit” beside the timecode. On my monitor, it had “UBR” beside the on-screen timecode. While I was watching the footage, the TC stayed at 00:00:00:00.

There were color bars at the start of each tape, but they looked vastly different from SMPTE bars. It had vertical colors bars, but then it had like a white->black gradient, and some ‘other’ stuff I don’t remember.

Maybe this is acutally normal DV NTSC (or DVCAM) footage and not HDV? If so, how do I get timecode showing?

    What is UBR/U-bit?
