  • Ability to read FCP7’s ProRes422 files on older systems?

Now that alot of folks here have upgraded…

Has anyone checked to see if you can capture using the new version of ProRes422 and play these files on an older system that has not been upgraded, yet?

Yes, I know the limitations of ProRes422 and older systems but I’m referring to those with the capability to play ProRes422.

We are trying to weigh our options and look towards the future at the same time. The amount of upgrades makes a difference in these tougher economic times, especially for the logging stations or offline systems.

    Any idea?

[Steve Eisen] “ProRes 4444, Prores Proxy and ProRes LT, no. “

I can read the new ProRes4444 on my G5 with FCS2 no problem. I downloaded the Alpha Transitions, which are in this codec and they play fine. I am wondering if the Pro Kit update, which happened around the same time as the release of FCS 3, allowed for this.

Have not tried ProRes Proxy or ProRes LT yet. If anyone wants to post test files, I would be happy to check.

Though I can play ProRes 4444, I cannot encode to it.

Before I upgraded to 7, I confirmed that ProRes 4444 with it’s alpha channel worked fine in 6.0.6.

I would hope that the decode-only parts of the the newer codecs are built into the most recent versions of QuickTime instead of ProKit.

That would make it simpler to advise people without Final Cut Studio to simply update to the most recent version of Quicktime if they want to view footage from us.
