A shape following a custom path From Ai to AE

Hi there,

First of all, to copy the clipboard data (including paths) from Illustrator to After Effects you must make sure that the Illustrator Preferences are set up to do so. Go to the Preferences > File Handling and clipboard in Illustrator and choose the option AICB and make sure Preserve Paths is selected.

Then in After Effects open the Position Property of the layer you want to copy the data into and select the Position property (by clicking on the word Position). Move the Timemakrker to where you want the move to start and then hit Paste. The Keyframes will automatically be pasted as roving keyfrmaes so simply select and drag the first or last one to retime the animation as required!

This is great but not quite what I wanted to do:

1- I want to bring in a PNG plane ( just as an example) that is going to follow the spiral path from AI…
That i copy and past from AE…

2- So the plane is following the path of the spiral preset from Ai…( I can do it on a path that I make using follow path command…)

Is that even possible?

Your phrasing kind of makes it sound like you’re thinking about it in reverse.

You said –

Unless that was a typo, and you meant from AI.

If we’re understanding you correctly, all you have to do is select the path in AI, copy it, and paste it into the position property of the .png layer.

In AE, your .png layer will then animate around, following the path of the spiral shape.

Isn’t that what you want do?

Hi there,

Yes, you can do this. Just draw the spiral in Illustrator and then use the steps I outlined in my previous post to paste the path data into the Position data of the PNG layer. 🙂
