I’ve After Effects 5.0 on OS9. Hadn’t heard of nulls before, and not sure how to make a new one. Does this tutorial work with 5.0 or only with the latest incarnations of the software?

    Try, Layer>New>Null Object

I think they should be there because I was taking a JC class and one of the other students actually used a Null, the only one all quarter, those were conservative times.

If they are there it looks to me like the tut should work for AE5.0, methinks.

If they’re not there you can use a standard solid and turn it’s visibility off.

    Thanks.
    The Solid is there.
    Just not a null.

Am in the middle of some tape logging atm, but will have a tinker later, and see how I get on. Ta.

    [Ajmetz] “Thanks.

Not sure if you understood what I meant there, my fault for such a short reply =)

A Null is just an ’empty’ layer that can store useful information about transforms, effects, or most other layer attributes. It stores this information in the same way that normal layers do. In fact, a Null is essentially a regular old solid that you can’t see… Sooo…

If you can’t make Nulls, make a regular solid, turn its visibility off and use it exactly as you would a Null Object. If you make your invisible solid 100 x 100 pixels with its anchor point at [0,0] then it’s literally the same thing as a default Null Object. You can follow the tutorial along precisely, only you’d want to use your invisible solid wherever it asked you to use a null!

This weeks AE podcast will explain Nulls and some of their many uses, so keep your eyes open.
