    Question:

Why was a post I left earlier about a massive discount I was emailed about for Sapphire filters removed off the Cow? I made it clear (and I think my post history here makes it credible) that I was NOT connected with the site in question, and that I was merely passing on what I thought was a relevant offer to Cow readers. I won’t repeat it, as I have clearly offended someone here. I thought someone else might want to benefit from a $700 saving.

I would find it less galling if posts here regarding equipment were not regularly answered by people who are financially connected to the companies they recommend. This is something I have never done.

I would appreciate some answer from someone here, as I spend a portion of my time on this forum helping people. I think that would be polite. If you wish to contact me privately, that option is/was also available to you.

    Kind regards,

    Ben

I have no idea why it was removed and honestly didn’t see the thread, but was that email supposed to be made public or was it only for registered users? If it was for registered users, then the folks who sell those plug-ins would certainly be all over Ron and Kathlyn to pull the thread in a hurry.

That’s a loaded statement. I’ll be happy to share with you all my invoices, including a huge invoice I just paid for my Final Share SAN system from MaxxDigital. All of us moderators work for absolutely zero on the Cow. Nada, no money at all. All those tutorials that are loaded up here on the Cow? We don’t get paid for those either. We just do them because we enjoy doing them and supporting the Cowmmunity.

I recommend what works for us, I could not care less who makes it. I don’t recommend what doesn’t work in my shop. You can go ahead and make your broad statements, I’ll just keep offering all kinds of free advice here like I’ve been doing for years.

I never made any comment about your own advice here – I said that people often respond in relation to equipment questions when they are financially connected to the company – for example people who work for equipment suppliers. I know nothing about your relationship to your suppliers, nor do I care to – you put in a lot of time here on many subjects. None the less, my statement is true, whether you care for it or not.

The post I left (which was there until I refreshed the Cow page this evening) related to a sale promoted by a company with whom I am not a registered user, and which is freely and publically available on their website. Clearly they are making money selling it at this price, and I genuinely thought others might benefit (as I have) from such an unusually big saving on an expensive product.

I’m still confused about why it was removed.

I too have no idea why that post was removed. I too never saw it. I think that the Cow reserves the right to post it’s own advertising on the Cow…and doesn’t like it when others do. We might tout hard drives and capture cards from companies, but we don’t post sales about them.

As for being “financially connected” to companies…in what way? I’ll be open and say that I have been hired by CalDigit and Matrox and Panasonic to work a trade show for them. That is my job was to tell about my real life experiences with the product and show people how I use them. They pay me for my time, like I am paid for my time when I work on a show. I rep their products because I like them. If I didn’t like their products, then I wouldn’t work for them. But I also do not get “kickbacks” for posting my recommendations. I have many many companies send me equipment to test and possibly review. I don’t get paid by the companies for these reviews, but I do get paid by the Cow if they are posted here. I don’t get to keep this equipment I am sent to review either. If I want it, I have to pay for it.

I recommend MaxxDigital drives, AJA capture cards, Decklink cards…and I have not been compensated for that advice.

And of course, being a private entity, the Cow reserves the right to remove any posting as well.

    Good post Shane.

The kids who have their heads unceremoniously impaled at the top of the forums are not “moderators,” they’re the hosts and, presumably, experts with the product featured in the forum’s title. You want to talk to the people who own and run the Creative Cow site.
You can contact the Lindebooms or any other Cow staff member easily and directly.

It only hurts for a day or two. Bessie’s Famous Hot Sauce helps the pain subside pretty quickly.

I’ll note that no one is inclined to answer my actual question, although thanks for all the un-asked for assurances about yourselves – I think I’ve been in the industry long enough to filter out opinions given impartially or otherwise, and had long ago decided both you and Shane acted for better motives.

Alas for anyone else who cared, but I saved $700 yesterday. I am still at a loss to understand how the advertising carried here precludes me posting information about someone else having a sale elsewhere (which may be of genuine interest to other users). If the Cow genuinely feels it does, then I feel it have lost sight of the point of forums like this, and the reasons people visit them – impartial imformation and advice. As the post was removed from this specific forum, I have no interest in pursuing it outside here, as this would be the proper place to explain why the post was removed.

Feel free to move along – I have. I thank you all for all the help you have been in so many threads here, and wish you all the best for the future.

    All the best,

    Ben
