A Poll on Storage Choices
Posted by Craig Wales on December 2, 2010 at 3:31 pmHello all: I’m conducting some research on alternative storage solutions for my HP xW8600 system running Avid MC 5.3.5 on a Nitris DX. I currently have 8 rS73 Avid drives in a RAID configuration that only provides 584G of storage.
If you would take a moment and let me know which storage solution you’re using and how satisfied you are with that choice, I would be most grateful.
Thanks very much–Craig

December 2, 2010 at 6:40 pmMany. From G-tech drives to CalDigit HD one (My main drive), to an iStoragePro 4TB unit to Caldigit VR. I like them all. I haven’t gone wrong with CalDigit…and on other shows used MaxxDigital RAIDS with success. And then larger Facilis Terrablocks and XServe Raids.

December 3, 2010 at 3:55 pmVarious and sundry here as well. We’re still using our original Avid Media RAID from Adrenaline days. We also have a Wiebetech (sp?) RAID that works well. And we sometimes use G-Tech RAIDs. All work flawlessly. The only issue we had was the Wiebetech did not like to be partitioned. Since we made it one volume it works fine.

December 3, 2010 at 4:14 pmThanks David, I’ve not looked into Wiebetech, so I’ll have to check them out. I’ve seen several posts here regarding G-Tech drive failures; however, I can’t determine the extent to which these issues are truly representative of the product. –Craig

December 3, 2010 at 4:45 pmI have a colleague who beats his G-Techs up more than we do and he has had one or two fail as well. We’re conscious of the issue but haven’t been bit yet.

December 3, 2010 at 10:10 pmCall Ron at Maxx Digital. Don’t get anything else.
I have an EVO2 16tb array that has been running 24/7, without any problems for 9 months. All HD media and it hasn’t skipped a beat. I think last time I speed tested it I was getting almost 800mb/s read/write, too.

December 6, 2010 at 2:34 pmKris: Thanks for the information on the Evo Expando. So far, I’ve looked at GTech, EditPro, CineRAID and they all seem like viable solutions. My main concern is whether it will work on my particular configuration. What system is your Evo running on?

December 9, 2010 at 8:19 amRunning on a Mac Pro, Avid Mojo DX system. Check in with Ron at Maxx. I’m sure he’d only be too happy to help determine if things will work or not. I’m pretty sure it’s an easy set up regardless of Mac/PC preference.
btw… in my earlier post I mentioned HD media…. to be clear I am talking about 185mb/sec, full raster HD.
