I’m just about ready to conform a feature length film and want to make sure I’ve got everything right.

I have a BlackMagic HD Pro (DualLink), OS 10.4.5, FCP 5.0.4, QT 7.0.4
Just did a fresh install of the BlackMagic Drivers from their website.
Running a Dual 2.0 G5 (PCI-X) with 4.5GB RAM and a 1.2TB SATA RAID with plenty of throughput

I rented a DVW-M2000P DigiBeta Deck and will be capturing through SDI to 10 Bit Uncompressed into FCP.

The BlackMagic Genlock/Tri-Synch REF Input is connected to the Ref Video BNC connector on the back of the deck and on Page 4 of the menu, “Outref” is set to “REF”

FCP Easy setup is set to “Black Magic PAL 10-bit”

I noticed there is no preset for Anamorphic, should I modify the preset to turn Anamorphic ON? (My footag is PAL DigiBeta Anamorphic)

Also the field dominance is Upper. I’m used to seeing lower for DV, I assume Upper is correct for SD Uncompressed.

The Black Magic PAL 10-bit preset for Device Control has the Playback Offset set to + 00:00:00:04. Why is that?

Also, in the BlackMagic Manual it talks about “Preserving Blanking Data or VANC” on 3 video lines at the top of a captured movie. Is this anything I should be thinking about using?

    Any other

A friend suggested not using the Genlock/Reference cable at all, and just hooking up the SDI In AND SDI Out. He said the SDI out from the card will feed the deck with stable black.

Have others had success with this method?

    Thank you,
    Matthew

[mlondon] “Also the field dominance is Upper. I’m used to seeing lower for DV, I assume Upper is correct for SD Uncompressed.”

This is correct. If you use the easy setups, it will be configured for you.

[mlondon] “he Black Magic PAL 10-bit preset for Device Control has the Playback Offset set to + 00:00:00:04. Why is that?”

This is just the default settings. You’ll need to do a few tests to see if it will work with your deck. Some decks may require a different value.

[mlondon] “Also, in the BlackMagic Manual it talks about “Preserving Blanking Data or VANC” on 3 video lines at the top of a captured movie. Is this anything I should be thinking about using?”

Not really. Unless you’bve got closed captions, VITC or some other data in the blanking of your video you want to preserve.

You don’t really need to connect the REF this way. The card will output stable black video when in capture mode so that your deck can lock to it. Just enable that option the Blackmagic Preferences Pane and make sure the “To Deck” SDI output is connected to the input of the deck.
