  • A Couple of Cubix Questions – Looking to Upgrade

So I’m finally upgrading to a cubix expansion chasis (the Desktop 2 model, with 4 single width slots): https://www.avalive.com/CUBIX/XPDT-X16-24-OSV/128759/productDetail.php. Its been a long time coming but 2K work is dictating the extra horsepower to my GT120/285 current setup.

With that said, I know it isn’t spec, but I’m thinking of putting 2 GTX285’s in the cubix and then trying to cram a red rocket in there as well in slot 3 (as alluded to in this thread from a while back: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/277/3497#3833. Has anyone had any overheating issues with this or noticed any problems with this setup?

Also, instead of another GTX285, I’ve been considering a GTX480 for the extra horsepower. Would having a GT120(mac)and GTX285/GTX480(cubix) combo pose any problems as obviously the GTX285 and the GTX480 don’t match (do I need a matched pair of 285’s or 480’s). Just haven’t run across any documentation on whether Resolve plays well with this or not. Thanks all!

I think with the Desktop-2 xpander with 4 single wide slots you will not be able to fit anything else in the chassis if you are using 285’s or 480’s as they are double wide.

I was looking into this too. The price difference between the x2 and the x4 is about $500 on the B&H website. Having the 4 double wide slots will give you way more flexibility. You could have 3x GPU + RR which you would otherwise not be able to have installed.

Agreed. I had originally purchased the x2 and thought I could make it work but it was a tight fit and once I caught the smell of what I thought was burning plastic I decided enough was enough and sold the x2 and got the x4. Its kick ass. I have 2 285s and a Rocket inside and its quick.

I’m tempted to toss another 285 in there but I seem to remember Rohit saying they weren’t happy with the performance of 3GPUs (or maybe just 3 285s) Maybe he can chime in to see if this is still the case.

I wonder if 480’s are better supported under Lion ?

Robbie, thanks for sharing regarding your experience with the red rocket in the Cubix 2. That’s exactley what I was worried about. I’m definately feeling like the 4 double wide option is worth the extra $500 at this point. Thinking 2 x GTX 285’s is probably the best bang for the buck here being that I already own one. I’m assuming (after a little bit more digging around in old threads) that the 480 would default to the same number of GPU’s as the 285 if installed with one (as in DaVinci will only recognize the lesser number of GPU cores on a card if two different cuda cards are installed for processing). Anyone know if this is correct, or am I making it up?

You won’t regret getting the 4x double wide. That is what I have with 2x 285s a RR and an Atto H680. Works great.

Just to emphasize more of what Paul said, Cubix GPU-Xpander Desktop 4 was lab-tested running with 4x RED Rockets by one of the major industry vendors a few months ago. I found out at NAB that we ran the 4x Rocket configuration at a consistently cooler temp than anything else the vendor has tested.

Thanks for the Desktop 4 thumbs-up Paul!
