A blast from the past, FCP7 plug in needed..Circle Blur
Posted by Justine-paula Robilliard on May 12, 2022 at 10:02 amHi Everyone,
I have spent over a day searching the internet for a plug in for Final Cut Pro 7, we use 7 here, I need the circle blur and or pixellate plug in, to blur faces and such, my copy of final cut pro 7 does not have any circle blur option, only gaussian blur… On the work machine there is circle blur, not sure if it is a plug in, I have hunted everywhere, please?? Anyone??

May 12, 2022 at 12:17 pmI have not used good old FCP7 in a long time, but what you could do is duplicate your video layers use the mask shape on the top layer select oval as your shape move this over the face you want to blur add a blur filter gaussian will do. Try this

May 12, 2022 at 12:35 pmHi Emmet,
The problem is that the oval shape+gaussian blur is very limited, to only 1 object, and to blur out 2 or more is a huge issue.
On the work mac we have “circle blur” I think it is a plug in, and I cannot find the download for this plug in, what I do on the work mac is duplicated the “circle blur”, use the + center and relocate the 2nd instance of the circle blur..

May 12, 2022 at 12:59 pmWow Thanks Andy, do I just unzip and copy them to a certain folder in FCP7? Been a long time since I did anything like this, a bit rusty on the process…

May 12, 2022 at 1:07 pmHi Andy,
I just unzipped and placed the whole collection in the plug in folder, and wow, yes just perfect, and with the tint, I can do a lot of faces, with the tint see who is who, and then take off the tint, this is perfect, OMG, thank you so much, you have no idea how happy I am…thank you!!!

May 12, 2022 at 3:27 pmIn an effort to do what you’re needing, I double-layered the video, opened “Effects”, opened “Matte” then added the “Mask Shape” unto the V1 video. From the “Filters” tab, I selected “Oval” shape and adjusted with the horizontal & vertical scale sliders until a circle was created ad clicked on “Invert”. Then on the V2 video layer, I clicked on the “Motion” tab and adjusted the Opacity level to blot out the face. It works but only in a static image as it won’t follow action…that is another task for another time!

May 15, 2022 at 3:17 pmHi Justine,
It’s been a while since I used Final Cut Pro 7 but…you should be able to:
1. Duplicate your clip and place it directly above it on the next video track with the frames matching.
(I hope this is clear…but I mean you will have two duplicate clips in the timeline stacked on video track 1 and track 2)
2. On the top (Duplicated clip: Track 2) put a Circle mask on top of the persons face.
3. Invert the circle.
4. Place a blur on the (Duplicated clip: Track 2) top clip with your circle mask.
5. Keyframe your (Duplicated clip: Track 2) top clip which will only be a blurred face in a circle as the face moves around in the frame.
I hope this helps.Hi Justine,

May 15, 2022 at 4:31 pmHi Nicholas,
Yes I used that method if there was 1 object to blur, however it tends to not work on 2 or more objects, the solution is the Andy’s blur, it is perfect, as I can keyframe the blur I need, set the tint to a color, keyframe multiple instances of this plugin, on the same clip of video, then reduce the tint to 0, and render, it worked perfectly, so happy….
yeah folks still use FCP7, as it is a great tool for tv news video editing, actually in many ways superior to FCP X, very happy to not be using X, there are aspects of 7 that suck, but on the whole, 7 is a bit better… It is the audio that is the problem, being able to have the window of 7 showing the audio with keyframes is so much better than X…
