a better way to ingest from my dslr
Posted by Sherwin Akbarzadeh on January 31, 2011 at 1:59 pmHi,
I always have trouble ingesting large videos from my Canon 550d. I use Image Capture via usb and it always stalls on files over 2GB or so. There must be a better way… any advice appreciated.

January 31, 2011 at 2:42 pm“ingesting”? 🙂
I assume you mean capturing or simply copying/moving files from the camera to you PC/mac?try buying a good card reader, that way you wont need the camera and can sometimes capture multiple cards.
hope that helps

January 31, 2011 at 10:40 pmCF cards are formatted as FAT-32, which means that the file size limit is 4GBs.
If you are on FC, you need import by Log&Transfer.
See Shane’s Ross tutorial on Tape-less Workflows.

February 1, 2011 at 10:56 amThanks Greg, but im tying to avoid spending money on a card reader.
Rafael, I took a look at Shane Ross’s tutorial. For some reason, my Camera does not pop up on my OSX. Image Capture recognizes it but Finder does not and nor does FCP Log and Transfer.
The files must be somewhere but where?

February 1, 2011 at 11:02 amCard readers are actually quite cheap.
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Chip-i-Fast-SD-SDHC-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer-USB-2-UK-/200564039528?pt=UK_Photography_MemoryCardReaders_RL&hash=item2eb28c5f68#ht_1035wt_937the reason your files don’t show up on your osx, is because the mac does not see the camera as an external device. the card reader will solve this problem.
hope that helps

February 1, 2011 at 11:05 amThanks Greg, but I don’t actually own this camera. It was lent to me for a shoot and I just need to get one 1.3GB file of it. Any other solutions?

February 2, 2011 at 3:14 amAfraid that’s it man- you can always buy and return a $10 reader at any electronics store.

February 4, 2011 at 8:03 pmRight.
Most still cameras and domestic camcorders software is for PCs.
You can try with one, but buying a card reader will be easier.
