8mm movie film in 720 or 1080 mode
Hi All,
I am using footage shot in 8mm movie film. I have already transfered it to a mini dv. Any way, I want the best looking image possible. I am thinking of just keeping the image in its mode of 4:3 and blowing it up instead of transferring it to hd. Is this what people are doing? I have blown it up to full hd and it looks like there is too much noise. How does projects that show up on the history channel do it?

We don’t telecine to DV if we are doing HD. DV is the lowest quality broadcast format out there. If I was working on an HD show, I’d telecine to the tape format we are using the most. If we are shooting DVCPRO HD 720p, then I’d transfer to DVCPRO HD tape. If we were shooting HDCAM with the F950, then I’d telecine to HDCAM at 1080i
But, when it comes to upconverting footage to use in an HD project, I either capture with the Kona 3 and use it to upconvert the footage, or I use Compressor to upconvert the footage.

This project is just a family project that I am editing on the 720p timeline. I might blow it up in the future to 1080p. If I transfer it using compressor it has more noise. I am wondering since it is 4:3 to just blow it up till it hits the top to the bottom of the screen. So the picture will be in the middle and their will be black on the sides because it does not fill the whole screen. I would rather have the picture smaller then have bad looking footage. Am I thinking right. Would I do the same process with old vhs video. Maybe I should just leave it totally in the 4:3 and not try to blow it up so it will not reach the top to the bottom. The footage coming out of compressor on any of this stuff has too much noise when blown up to hd.
