80’s trailer “sound filter”

To be honest with you, I don’t remember movie trailers of the 80s having anything but great audio quality (for the time), with voice over artists who had the “voice of God”.

I’ve seen a few mock 80s trailers on the web in which the audio sounds as if it was strained through a sock into a tin can – is that what you’re looking to achieve?

From the sound of it, the audio is badly clipped (distorted), and then normalized. Adding a bit of reverb to it couldn’t hurt as well, but as I said, real feature film trailers have always had immaculate sound.

Aaah…then what you’re talking about is either flanging, phasing, or a ring modulator. It sounds as if a very slight ring modulation filter may have been used, plus a slight phase shift.

I’m not sure if the ring modulator made it into the new release of Audition, but you can probably get a free, or cheap plugin (I believe that Audition still uses the VST format plugin engine) which will do the trick.

As far as phasing and flanging, you should be good to go. Here’s a rundown from Adobe:
