About a year ago, there was a post called:

720p30 tape footage imports 59.94 even at 720p30 capture

    I’m having the same problem:

At the time, Walter Biscardi responded:

“Was the 1400 set up with User Bits turned on and was it recognizing a true 30p signal? If the User Bits were off, you can’t extract the 30 frames. If the deck wasn’t truly recognizing a 30p signal from the camera, then you can’t extract the 30 frames.

DVCPro HD always records at 59.94, it’s just the user bits that allow you to extract the 30p.”

I still have the deck, so I can change the setting. How do I turn on User Bits? Is there any other setting I should change? I have the manual for the deck, but the section which addresses user bits seems to refer to recording, not playback.

Also, I have one tape which did come in at 29.97 and the capture window had the message “removing VFR duplicate frames from source media.” This resulted in the desired 29.97. I did nothing to make this difference happen. All the tapes were digitized with the exact same deck and capture settings, so deductive reasoning suggests that this might mean that the other tapes, which digitized at 59.94, possibly didn’t have the correct 30p signal?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That’d be my first guess. Do you have a Kona card by chance? Are you coming in over firewire?

No kona card. I am coming in over firewire.

Are you using the 1400 deck?

If so, go into the basic menu and look at menu number 005 (SUPER) and change it to whatever is most convenient for you to hook up to an external monitor. Composite will do, or SDI (Hd or SD) or component. It’s up to you and your monitor. Default is composite. Flip the ‘Super’ switch to ‘on’ in the lower right corner of the deck on the front of the deck.

Then go to Basic menu # 006 and change the counter to T&UB (number 0007). Take a look at your monitor and at the user bits. The first number in the user bits should be the frame rate. Tell me what it says there.

Thanks so much for your help.

    it says:

    UBR 99 99 30 56 R 16

This is a tape I just digitized which went in to the system at 59.94.

Put in one that you know is 30 and what does that say?

  • Laura Shapiro

    September 8, 2008 at 12:09 am

    UBR 22 92 30 56 R 10

The first two numbers change as the tape is played. 30 stays constant.

If they’re both 30, why the difference?

At least we know the tape is good, so it must be a setting at your end.

You didn’t capture bars, did you? If so, you must NOT capture the bars, or capture them separately as the bars do not maintain the same tc rate as your tape.

Try resetting the easy setup to DVCPro HD 720p30 and try again. You are logging and capturing spearate takes, correct and not the whole tape?

The bars may be the answer to the problem. The tape that came in correctly did not have bars. And yes, we are digitizing the entire tape. All of the tapes say 30. Can we pull out the duplicate frames with cinema tools or do I need to redig?

[Laura Shapiro] “Can we pull out the duplicate frames with cinema tools or do I need to redig?”

Recapturing would save you the most grief, yes. You cannot remove the frames with Cinema Tools.

DVCPro Frame Converter is probably the best thing to use in this scenario.
