720p29.97 file needs to convert to 1080p23.98. How?
I have a supplied file from our edit house that is a ProRes 1280×720 29.97 progressive file. Without involving them, due to cost, what is the best way to convert this project to 1920×1080 23.98p?
Note: I’m all software based here with up, down and cross conversions using Compressor or AE (which I’m still learning). But I guess my real question is that the original file @ 29.97 is true 29.97, not 23.98 with added pulldown. Otherwise I could just reverse telecine this right? So how will a software frame rate conversion to 23.98, as well as upConversion to 1080 work/look? Will Compressor yield good results using Optical Flow retiming and scaling?
Output is needed for Cinema screening is 1080p23.98 Uncompressed Quicktime.
Most of what I’ve found on the COW is for conversions the other way, 23.98 to 29.97. Any suggestions?

Use Compressor. Make a custom preset to change the frame rate from 29.97 to 23.976.

With what you have, I’d use Compressor. Reverse telecine as you guessed will not make it here, as there’s no fields and it’s not duplicating fields and frames like pulldown. I would do it like this:
Drop your file into Compressor
Check and make sure in the Inspector that it recognizes the file as Progressive. Since you know it’s progressive, make sure this is set – Compressor will often fail to interpret correctly.
Use the preset I’ve attached.This preset uses best resizing technique and best retiming technique. Prepare to wait a while for the finished file.
You can utilize this preset if you place it in:
Macintosh HD : home : Library : Application Support : Compressor

Mark, after Tom’s reply yesterday I made the exact same preset and did a test on about :30 of the entire 12 min. video. The result looked really clean and scaled nicely. I was pleasantly surprised. Although I was only able to view 1-2 sec. at a time during playback in FCP on the 40″ Sony.
I think its time for a new RAID array. What’s weird is that I’ve been able to playback uncompressed HD @ 1080 before on my RAID O, but for some reason this one would playback clean. Maybe my disks are getting full.
