Hi everyone. I need to transfer my show to HDCam, possibly Beta, for film festival screenings.

I shot 720p24 HDV with the JVC GYHD100U, recording onto mini-DVs. I captured off the camera in FCP 5.1.4 through FireWire Basic.

I have exported for film festival screener copies via compressor to MPEG2, but now it’s time to get the movie into a format for screening room projection.

Some of the festivals have requested HDCam, some of them Beta. My question is, what is the best way to accomplish this? Should I simply export the show as a self-contained QT with current settings, then have this output to HDCam/Beta (as a post-production house suggested)? Or should I create an EDL and access the original mini-DV’s in an online scenario? Obviously much more work-intensive this route, but would there be any significant quality advancement? Or would the QT be just as good?

Any helpful tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much
    Rich

You do what the people who are actually laying it off to tape suggest you do. You need to discuss your options with the post-house that’s making the master tapes for you. They know their equipment, they know what looks best on it. If they recommend a file in a specific format, that’s what you give them.

You should probably sit down with someone from the post-house & discuss your various options & what they cost. See if they can run a test with (or at least take a look at) a short clip reel that has some representative shots, perhaps some shots that you’re especially concerned about. Then decide what you can afford, or what gives you the best bang for your buck.

    Hi,

I know it’s a long time ago but how did the project turn out? I’m facing a similiar situation now. DV anamorphic, not great original quality but with a possible cinema release.
