    Hi guys!

    I’ve got some videos that were shot in 1280×720 @ 60 FPS (nearly 4hrs). I’m editing them in SVP 11 (not doing much, adding some fades and text) and then putting them on DVDs using DVD Architect Pro 5.2. I’ve used Marks DVD Bitrate Calculator to get the right variable bit rate, but I’m losing a ton of quality. I don’t mind putting the project on more than one DVD (preferably not more than 2 but 3 wouldn’t be the end of world either lol)

    The videos are instructional videos on installing custom motorcycle kits, and the guy I’m doing this for is a real stickler for clarity. He wants the videos to be as clear as possible so people can see all the little details. I’m not sure how (or if) it’s possible to keep most, or all, of the clarity of the original videos and get them small enough to not take 10 DVDs lol.

    Any suggestions?

    First of all, you’re taking almost a 3X quality hit but going from 1280 x 720 down to 720 x 480 🙁
    Then you’re converting your pristine footage to MPEG-2 which is another quality hit.
    The only way to maximize quality is to do all your renders at a CBR of 8,000,000. Some folks say that you can get away with 8,500,000 but I prefer the lower number.
    At that bit rate (8M), you can only get 1 hr. 11 min. on a DVD (using Marks calculator with the safety margin set to 5%).

    1) You could split them across 3 DVD-5 discs as you suggest

    2) You could put them onto one dual layer DVD-9 disc, and using 2 pass VBR settings of min 2640 avg 4400 max 7696 get acceptable output (I am assuming your project length = exactly 4 hours).

    Burn the DVD DL disc with DVD-ROM mode enabled to ensure maximum playback compatibility with DVD players.

    3) Render to one BD-DL bluray disc using a CBR of 23850 kb/s, but if single layer BD-R is your only option, then a render of CBR 12800 kb/s may be quite acceptable.
