I’ve posted this at the BM forum as well, but am reposting in case someon here may have a clue…

I have a Quncktime uncompressed 10 bit 720p23.98 timeline. I can play it on a Panasonic HD monitor as 720p23.98 or as 1080p23.98 using up-conversion in the card, I guess. Both look fine.

But when I connect to a D5 deck (Panasonic 3700), only the 720p looks fine. The 1080 strobes somewhat.

Also, the deck can only record as 720p59.94 with the 720 signal I’m feeding. AND, the client wants a transfer at 720p59.94 but with non-drop time code.

I’m from a PAL place, sot this is making my head swim a bit. Anyone with any ideas?

Basically, my timeline is 720p23.98. What are the various recording options I have with D-5.

Does the BMD card do a true cross-convert from 720 to 1080 or is your monitor doing this?

D5 does accept 24p so you can lay off your 23.98 timeline directly to the D5 unless your final delivery has to be 1080. When I deliver 1080 here in the states it always has to be HDCAM, not D5.

I think it is the card. When I switch from 720 to 1080 via the easy setup, the monitor OSD reports the resolution. Likewise when I switch back to 720. Maybe its psF not true P or something like that.

If I keep my out at 720, the deck doesn’t allow 1080 to be an option.

Unless your card is doing a true cross convert of 720 to 1080 then it probably would cause some issues with your output to tape.

I can manually switch my Kona 2 from 720 to 1080i but I’m forcing it to play back the material in a non-native state and it doesn’t look very good. My Monitor will show that it’s now receiving 1080i, but the K2 does not do a true cross-convert of 720 to 1080i or vice-versa.

My 1200A deck does. So I’m just wondering if your card is doing the true cross-convert or if you’re just manually switching the output and while it looks decent on your monitor, it won’t look correct going to tape.

It is likely you need a Tri-Level sync.

I have tri-level sync connected. My house sync is tri-level. It also goes to 2 other FCPs, 2 Avids, 3 smoke, 2 flame, 1 backdraft, one telecine, one lustre. So its definitely there.

With the same FCP system I did manage to make a tape out to D-5 as 720p59.94 (that’s what the deck was set to) Program was 90 mins. And FCP played out flawlwessly.

What is your tri-level sync set as?
