720/25p or 1080/25p
Wondered if anyone could advise – sorry if this is an old question. Just finished a shoot on DVCpro HD using Panasonic hdx900. Most stuff is 25p, but we also shot some at 50p for a slomo scene. I was assuming we were shooting 720/25p but later discovered DOP was shooting 1080/25p. Camera cannot shoot at 1080/50p so all the 50 stuff was at 720. The camera assistant said it was best to keep everything 1080 and upres the 50p stuff, as this was going to be framr rate converted to 25 anyway. I was initially hoping to keep it simple, having everything at 720. The final output will be DVCProHD and the film is for the festival circuit etc (doubt I will need it transferred to film.) I am hiring a Panasonic 1400 deck to digitise in and cut on FCP 6 – running on a mac pro dual core with radion X1900. I am concerned I’ll have problems digitising/cutting at 1080 on my setup. I don’t have any extra cards and was hoping to capture through the deck over firewire. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I generally capture footage at the resolution it will be broadcast. (For festival films 720 is fine)
Also, if you capture everything at 720 then all of your footage will have the same quality. That said, if you wanted to go to 1080, the 720 upres’d footage will still look good. Furthermore, your system should be able to handle 1080, just play it safe with dynamic resolution etc.By the way, are you J Cooper of Dreamer, Australia??
