720 to 480
I am new to shooting HD footage. Does it pay to shoot in 720 or even 1080 but broadcast it in 480? If one is better than the other, Is it a difficult or expensive process to down-convert. I am shooting a Jewelry commercial and just wondering if I would get a better image shooting in 720, 1080 or stick with 480. I am not looking for a letter box look?

Yeah 720 or 1080 will yield a nicer image in SD and you can reposition shots. To shoot for 4:3 just mask off the edges of your frame so you can crop in post. Downconversion is free with just about any editing application such as Final Cut Pro, etc.
