640 x 480 Photo Jpeg Unlimited RT
Editing on FCP 6.0.5 Mac Pro 16 gigs of ram, internal drives, no media array
Getting footage from a Canon XL1 or 2 in 640 x 480, I cannot change
the size and the producer is not willing to change the size since the
videos are going to be put on the web.Using the Photo Jpeg codec in FCP works fine, but I have to render every time.
I have read that using FCP6 and the ProRes codec will fix this, but
when I create a new sequence with ProRes, the frame is resized and I
still cannot edit it properly since the frame size is wrong.Also, I’ve read that you can modify the RT file to allow unlimited RT, but it
causes a Gamma problem that makes it uneditable, so I”m not interested in that if it really is that bad.I just need unlimited RT when I am editing, and I know there is not an
“Easy Setup” in FCP 6 to do this in 640 x 480. Is there a codec I can
use where I can keep the same frame size and use unlimited RT, then
copy and paste my sequence back to a Photo Jpeg codec sequence to
fully render?I’ve never really worked with this size in FCP 6, and I’ve read a lot of posts on it,
but only from FCP5 users. -

Hi Jenny,
Your producer is complicating your editing and compromising the quality of the film.
Capture native DV and edit in a 640×480 Proress sequence.
With a MP with 16GB RAM you shouldn’t have RT preview problems.

I guess he is doing it because the video is only going to be on the web, never TV or DVD, just web videos.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the option to capture it either, he just sends me a 640 x 480 video. So any recommendations?

Hi Jenny,
Open a new sequence. Drop your clip there, and when FC ask you if you want the Sequence to match the movie setting, say YES.
You should have RT and be able to export without rendering.

I need to edit without rendering, when I drop the footage into a new sequence it asks to change my settings, I say yes, and the compression is set to P JPEG and I have to render after everything I do.

Sorry the delay.
Why don’t you transcode the clip to 8/10b Unc or Proress?
Apple codecs will always works better than third part.
Just change the codec in the sequence.

Hi Rafael,
I converted the clip to 10b 4.2.2 Unc in Mpeg Streamclip keeping the aspect ratio of 640 x 480, but when I bring it back into FCP, it asks me to change sequence settings to Unc 10 bit, and I do, but I still get no RT menu.
The original file even though it’s from an XL1 has been converted using the P JPEG codec before it even gets to me. I’m fine with working in another codec, doing all my edits, then doing a final render in another sequence using P JPEG, but I cannot get the RT menu even when I convert the file previous to bringing it into FCP.
Thanks for your help and patience, maybe I’m missing something.
