60i to 24P conversion?
I am wondering what is the best way to convert 60i footage to 24p in any of the Final Cut Studio applications? I shoot all my sporting events in 60i for the purpose of slow motion, but when it comes time to make a DVD, I don’t really like the home-video look of all the other clips. Will rendering the footage in a 23.98fps sequence make it 24p, or is there something else I can do? Not particularly impressed with Nattress’ conversion.
Magic Bullet Frames looks like it will do what I want and I am hoping to try it out sometime in the near future.

If you want 24p, shoot it. Don’t think that you would be lowering Slo mo quality especially if you use Motion 3 for the speed changes. It really does a nice job no matter what the original format.

I’ve just been told that you always shoot 60i for slow mo. Motion 3 does an alright job with slowing down 30p/24p with optical flow, but it still isn’t perfect. Any other suggestions? I would hate to switch to shooting 24p in the middle of the season and have two different looks on the same DVD at the end of the year.

The only thing I’ve seen that does this well is a Teranex. It uses some complex technique I don’t fully understand. The problem is that the shutter speed for you shooting doesn’t match with 24p.
The silver bullet to this problem will be future cameras that can record at 120fps. Aside from having great potential for doing slow-downs, 24, 30, and 60 are all even multiples of 120. So you can record at 120fps and then finish at any normal frame rate you want.

I’ll second that. But software that actually does a very nice job is After Effects. I’ve done some music videos in the past that were shot on BetaSP and when finished, the networks didn’t even know they weren’t film.
Oh, and the Terranex has some special gnomes in there. First cousins, once removed from the Travelocity Gnome. He wasn’t very good at math so they sent him packing……..
