6 channel WAV to PCM 5.1 16bit on DVD-Video?
Hi all,
I’m making a DVD-Video disc which specifically must have a PCM audio track using 6 channels at
16-bit with no video (i.e. black screen) from a 6-channel WAV, has anyone been
able to compile a DVD with such PCM track? I have tried DVD-authoring
software like DVD-lab and Sony’s DVD Architect Pro but they don’t seem to support
PCM 5.1. Thanks in advance. -

I wouldn’t go with 5.1 PCM audio on DVD. That’s due to a huge consumption of space.
Use DTS, that is well supported & is acoustically lossless.Andreas Gumm

Hi Andreas,
DTS would have been my choice too but my client’s hardware does
not support DTS bitstream output, space is not an issue but
compatibility matters, I know PCM on DVD-Video is possible up
to 6 channels @ 6144 kbps, but apparently this spec is hardly
supported whereas PCM 2 channel is more common.Thanks.

If really needed you can author 6ch PCM audio in Scenarist SD!

Scenarist isn’t sold anymore. Besides, the learning curve is so huge you’d be spinning your wheels

Scenarist SD accepts 6 channel PCM audio at 24bit.
Don’t find my spec books, but look at the wikipedia article:

Yeah. I’d be surprised if even scenarist accepted a file like that. I’ve never seen a 6 ch PCM title ever

I don’t know where the concept of Scenarist accepting a 6-channel PCM file originated, but Scenarist SD accepts 2-channels of PCM up to 96KHz and 24-bit. This is directly from Scenarist help file.
Also the SD-2000 encoder will only encode up to 2-channels of PCM, even if you have the 8-channel hardware interface box.

I agree 6 ch PCM on a DVD is a very uncommon case, but since it is part of the official DVD specification I simply tested it out. import works, 6 ch are recognized.

I simply found that note from SONIC:
“Although the DVD Specification supports up to 8 channels of PCM audio, currently, there are no DVD players that support multi-channel PCM.”
That makes things very clear.Andreas
