5K Playback Dropping Frames!

Try this..

1. Delete Preferences (boot up PrP holding down Option (Alt) and Shift keys .

2. Delete Media Cache files

3. Delete Preview files

Find out where the folders for step 2 and 3 are. Close Premiere. Delete files inside both these folders.

Thanks for the advice Tom,

I’ve tried this, and unfortunately…it hasn’t worked. :/

I’ve also tried restarting the machine and messing with the settings a bit. still no luck.

I cant afford a red rocket, so I’m just curious to know if there IS a solution. I know I can edit 5k footage….I’m just angry its not cooperating.

Any other suggestions?

How full is your target drive where the RED media exists? If its kind of full, consider moving some of your other footage off of the drive.

Well when all else fails. Create a brand new project. Then import your current project into it. See if that helps.

Like Dennis said, check your media raid to see how full it is (Im assuming you have a raid if you are trying to play back 5K 😀 )

Is your graphics card running CUDA? I know its ATI so Im not sure its supported.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Unfortunately, the drive isn’t even half full, and it’s a 3TB drive, so that’s out of the question. I’m also running it on USB 3.0 and also have tried plugging it in via esata.

The playback issues are happening in a brand new project. And even if I make a new one, its all the same…dropped frames. 🙁

I’m not running CUDA, and dont think it does run on my graphics card…I should double check it, but I’m pretty sure about that.

I seriously don’t know what to do.

It sounds to me like you’re hitting your ceiling on that system…have you edited 5K RED footage before…or 4K?

Your display card isn’t assisting you at all as it is not an NVIDIA card running CUDA and not a supported OpenCL card (AMD/ATI’s GPU application implementation) so you have your CPU doing all the scaling and color work involved in post decoding as well…

Keep in mind that the software RED decoder is single threaded, so it doesn’t matter how many CPU cores you have (I also have the dual hex 2.66s), you’re using only one core for RED decoding. A supported GPU picks up all the scaling and color conversion work at the back end of the decode chain, so it should free up some CPU capacity and allow it to focus on the video decoding and playback more efficiently.

I’ve been able to run a stream of RED 5K with a beefy CUDA card and no RED Rocket, but when you have a single threaded process, clock speed affects processing capacity and those of us on large core count/low clock speed machines will notice some limitations.

Seriously though…a GPU that Premiere Pro can actually use will help.
