I am getting a new 5K iMac and I would like to get into making projects in Adobe Premiere. The last time I made a project in Premiere was back in 2000 so I really don’t know how to spec the iMac out. What are the essential things that need to be upgraded? I would like to keep the base 256GB SSD if possible because from what I have read on this forum I will be buying external drives. Do I really need the i7 or can I keep the i5? Will I suffer with the 256GB SSD or do I need the 512GB SSD? How much ram? GPU M925x? I am not a max everything out type of person unless there is justification to do so. All advice greatly appreciated.

Max everything you can afford because you’ll be stuck with your choices.

Thanks for the reply. Forgive my lack of knowledge here but why would I max out the SSD if I will be using external hard drives?

You don’t need to max out the SSD unless you have a looooooooot of applications or want to use that as a fast cache drive. I would put money on the CPU, GPU and RAM.
