5D critical focus from external monitor
How do you achieve critical focus of a moving subject using an external monitor (instead relying on the follow focus wheel)on a Canon 5D? The 5D outputs only 480p from the HDMI out so what looks to be in sharp focus might end up soft in the final video.

Practice using your setup is the only way to be sure of solid focusing. Don’t use a low f-stop. Use 4.0 or higher to allow you to have more of your image in focus. If you set it to 2.8 on down to 1.2, you’ll always have issues keeping focus on moving subjects.

Now if I see solid focus of my subject in a 480p monitor (while recording), does that mean that my actual recorded video in the card in 1080p is also sharply focused?

I actually want a blurred background so I want a low f-stop but at the same time be able to keep a moving subject in focus. Thanks and God bless.

I like the 7D for this reason. The 7D outputs HD while recording, I cant stand that the 5D spits out SD, I cant focus with that. It reminds me of my old HVX200, I could never focus with that.
