525 29.97 to 1080sf 23.98
As the subject line says, Im trying to go from standard def 29.97 to 1080sf 23.98. Coming out of the digibeta (thomson ttv 3450) I set my easy setup to 1080sf 23.98 10 bit and it should give me a blue line between my sdi in and my frame buffer(in my aja control panel). However, it does not, it gives me a red line, but it still does the conversion. I pull the footage in and about every 3 or 4 frames I get a blurred frame. I captured starting at hour one, so Im at an “A” frame. Everything Ive read seems to say that if you start at an A frame it should work perfectly. Sadly it is not. I know I can use cinema tools but it would be a HUGE time saver to do it on the fly on ingest. An ideas?

The Kona will not do this frame rate converion for you. If you had 525 23.98 footage, you could upconvert to 1080sf23.98

Interesting. I assumed that since I could from 1080psf 23.98 down to 525 29.97 it could do the reverse. Thats what I get for assuming.

Yeah, it’s seems it’d be an easy assumption to make.
Adding pulldown is a much easier process than removing it.
What’s your original source footage?

The story goes like this. I was at work, and a guy came in to train some people on another piece of software. He asked me if I was the fcp guy, and I said I was, then he asked me if I knew how to remove a 3:2 pulldown using the kona 3. I was under the impression that it could be done. He said he had never been able to figure it out. Being the fcp fanboy that I am I had to try it myself. I took some 1080psf 23.98 material and laid it off to a digibeta. Then I wanted to bring the material back in at 1080psf 23.98. Like I said earlier I assumed that since I could add a pulldown I would also be able to remove one. Lesson learned.

Aha! The truth comes out.
OK. The Kona can remove pulldown from 29.97 material with 3:2 pulldown but it has to be done during capture and has to be set up just right. Each capture has to start on an A frame of the cadence and then it can’t be captured across cadence breaks. This will remove the pulldown from 29.97 and get you 23.98 media. It is a workflow taht stems from film and usually you get a database that tells FCP where the A frames are and makes capturing 525 23.98 a breeze. If you don’t have that database, you’re doing it by hand which is doable but more tricky.
If you have already captured 29.97, then the Kona will not remove the pulldown on the fly from your captured source footage and it especially won’t do it while up converting to 1080psf23.98. The Kona is a great card, but it cannot do that. If you want to offline you material in 23.98, my suggestion would be to use DVCPRO HD 720p23.98. The Kona will cross convert from 1080sf23.98 to 720p23.98 without issue. If for some reason you need to offline in SD, I’d suggest capturing 525 @ 23.98. That way your tc will remain the same as your online footage. The Kona will add 3:2 pulldown to your SD 23.98 material for viewing on standard NTSC monitors.
