52 card pickup
Posted by Ken Latman on September 5, 2006 at 3:05 pmI’m working on a project that deals with playing cards. Are there any tutorials out there that deal with make a bunch of cards blow around like a dust bowl? I have custom front of a playing card and I want to use all 52 or less faces (diamonds, spades, etc.)
With parenting I can do a few cards at a time but I really don’t want to have my compostion filled with 104 layers (52 faces + 52 backs). I also not sure how to handle making this random.
Any ideas?

September 5, 2006 at 3:39 pmCard Dance enables you to blow up a layer in rectangular portions, and assign a flipside layer.
So you’d prepare a large file in Photoshop were all your cards are neatly lined up in rows and colums, and a second file/layer where all the backsides are lining up perfectly to the frontsides.
You may want to scale down the X and Y scale of the Cards, then pipe some noise precomps into the Gradient layers to control rotation and 3D position of the cards.
Animate the evolution of the precomp noise to get some turbulence. -

September 5, 2006 at 4:07 pmI think Card Dance can do anything with the right Gradient layer. If you have a hard time controlling the movemnet you might just get the cards airborne in a look you like, then rotate a camera around the suspended cards.
Ayato does something similar in his tut:
Example.16: Division & Rotation & Combination

Ah, yes, you could do this with Shatter as an alternative, just set up the Cards (one psd) in PhotoShop like Philip suggested. Ayayto says you need a black line around each piece “card” in your case)to get it to seperate with Shatter. You wouldn’t need the Opacity dissolve he does, that’s just because he’s changing the words. Ayato can be a little confusing, a translation thing, but beautiful stuff.

September 5, 2006 at 8:07 pmHi,
Particular definitely gets my vote. I’ve done this sort of thing with Particular on a set of 10 company logos and it would be very easy to re-work for any number of playing cards. There is a step in the process that wasn’t immediately obvious, at least to me, involving how you load all the image files into Particular so if you get stuck, ask away and there are plenty of people here who can help you.

September 5, 2006 at 10:38 pmI’m not sure if a particle engine would allow a front and a backside layer for each card ?

September 6, 2006 at 4:01 amHi,
Good point. I think you are limited to the same image on both sides in Particular. Card Dance might be the best way short of going to a full 3D program.

September 6, 2006 at 9:04 amI’m not sure it would work but could your sprite be a precomp of 2 3d layers with front and back design on them?
Cheers
