Anyone else out there using FCP 5.1 with 720p HD capture yet?

I’m doing a DVCPro HD 59.94 capture via HD-SDI to the DVCPro HD codec via my Kona 2. (Easy Setup AJA Kona 2 DVCPro HD 59.94).

I’ve got about 55 shots in my bin batch digitizing. When the batch was completed I got an error message from FCP that it could not correctly Reconnect the media that was captured. I got this error message for every single clip. This is the same error that was happening with FCP 5.0 – 5.0.2 with 720p SDI captures.

Fortunately, it’s a false error as all the clips DO reconnect correctly. Just want to know if anyone is seeing this.

Ok, I take it back. It’s NOT a false error, it’s exactly the same capture problem from FCP 5.0 – 5.0.3.

If you capture 720p via HD-SDI, FCP 5.1 will NOT reconnect your media correctly. What you will end up with is a double length clip in your bin with the 2nd half of it black. You will need to throw away all of your clips in your Bin and re-import everything from your hard drive to fix this.

This is the same issue that took Apple almost 7 months to correct before so just be aware that you will need to work around this in 720p again if you go to FCP 5.1

You know, the last time I did this, I heard some 1,500+ feedback reports were sent in over just a few days and Apple addressed and fixed the 720p SDI capture issue in about 2 weeks. So you think we can get 2500 this time? Tell all your friends and neighbors to send in a feedback report on this issue because it would be nice to get it addressed in less than 6 months this time.

Just like the last time, I’ve provided a comment form for you here to send along and like the last time, let’s keep all the comments clean and respectful to the team. I know they’re all hard working people just like the rest of us. Also keep in mind that this is broken in FCP 5.1, if you’re running 5.0.4, be happy you are and just stay there if you need to capture 720p HD-SDI.

Start by going to feedback page:
    https://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

    Feedback Type: Bug Report

Which area of the application are you providing feedback on?: Capture / Import

    Subject: 720p HD-SDI Capture Not Re-Linking properly

    Comments:
Any Batch Capture or Clip Capture of 720p material using HD-SDI inputs will result in FCP incorrectly connecting to the media files at the end of the captures. FCP will display the error, “An unknown error occured while trying to reconnect ____ to the newly captured media….”

Clicking Continue will result in all of the clips in the bins showing up as twice their actual capture length. The 2nd half of all clips will be black. For instance if a 5 second piece of media is captured, a 10 second clip will appear in the bin. The first five seconds are the actual media and the last 5 seconds is just black.

If you then select all of the captured media in the bin and go to File > Reconnect Media FCP will show that there is an Online File with the correct file name located on the correct harddrive, and also and Offline File with the exact same filename located in an “unspecified path.” Doing a Search on the Online Media will correctly re-link all of the clips in the media with the actual media on the hard drive. When FCP wants to search again on the “unspecified path,” click “Try Again” to ignore this and all of the media in the bins will then display all the clips and media correctly.

This issue was addressed and fixed in FCP 5.0.4 but has re-appeared in FCP 5.1. Please correct this issue ASAP. Thank you!

    Walter,

Why is it with Apple that the more things change the more the stay the same as in F@@#$%% up?

Just when you think they have recovered the Pro in Final Cut Pro someone in software developments breaks it all over again.

But not to worry I have copied and pasted your feedback report into my autobot feedback system which will start sending out 1 million emails by tomorrow.

Sometime in the near future most likely 1 year from now all will be fixed and the next day FCP 6 will screw it all up all over again.

Oh great, now I’ll definitely hear from Cupertino. “Uh Mr. Biscardi, we understand you’re the person behind these 1 million emails….” ha ha!

This was one of those days when I really hate computers. At least it only took me about 20 minutes to figure out the workaround.

Just an update to all. After trashing my prefs (again) this morning, the HD captures seem to be working correctly.

But anything that’s upconverted from SD to HD on the way in is exhibiting all the behaviors I described. Working with several folks now to track down the issue. Will update you as we go, thanks for all the feedback so far!

Further Update – Issue has been resolved. It required a full removal of FCP and all its components and I also removed all the AJA Kona drivers. There is a checkbox in the new Kona Control Panels specific for FCP 5.1 compatibility. Thought that was it this morning, but it didn’t help.

So we did a full removal of everything, ran Disk Warrior on the hard drive, and re-install of all the components. Everything is working normally now. As soon as this project is done, we’ll go back and do a full Erase and Install of everything from the ground up.

Thanks to Steven from AJA who helped me track down the issue and for all the testing on his end.
