50s TV Look-and-Feel Plug-in Needed
Does anyone out there know where one can get an old 50s TV plug-in? I use both Final Cut Pro and After Effects.
Here’s an example of something an agency did recently for the game “Fallout 3”:

Digieffects’ Delirium has some in there as well. And, I’ve seen some pretty cool stuff on Sony’s Vegas that comes standard, not that that sounds like an option!!!

Final Cut has a decent built in Bad TV effect to add scan lines and warping. If you dial that in subtly, desaturate and play with your three way color corrector a bit you should be in good shape. Likewise, that clip had film damage, so you could look for a filter for that as well, or download the 8mm footage that Andrew Kramer has available at VideoCopilot.net and lay that over the top with the multiply composite mode applied, and you’re good to go.

That was collection of Plumbicon/Vidicon simulation and artificial reception errors artifacts in addition to 50ish framing and acting styles. No plugins for those things. Some gate weave and vertical frame wandering (film effects) shows up in the film logo at the end but the designers made a mistake, real TV-video should not have any of those. Unless, of course, it was kinescoped, and that’s a whole ‘nuther can o’ worms.
Not terribly difficult to get such visual sytlization by experimenting and tweaking and having fun with the built-in FCP filters. Pull out the chroma or just isolate the green channel. Levels to blow out the subtle grays to whites (vidicion only had about 12 effective shades of gray). A bit of glow to help simulate overdrive. Bit of sharpening to make it more artificial.
Warning: A little of these effects goes a long way. Resist the temptation to overuse or apply them in excess.

You got a lot of good advice here, but look in the AE tutorials here on the Cow as well. Aahron Rabinowitz has a few on old TV effects, including a great one for turn on, turn off the set.

Motion has a filter under Stylize called “bad TV”; plenty of parameters for you to tweak.

Can’t have too many cool plug-in’s and EFX available for clients. Gotta’ keep ’em happy!
