4×3 blurred edges effect in Motion
I’m new to FCPX and to Motion 5 (from FCP6) and I’m trying to build an effect for 4×3 video to fill a 16×9 screen.
The station I work at we deal with 4×3 a bunch, to fill the 16×9 viewing area we use two layers of video, the top layer is the 4×3 video the bottom layer is the same video clip but scaled up and blurred with a gaussian blur.
I want to create a custom effect filter in Motion 5 so I don’t need both layers but I can’t get it to work. I try using a clone of the effect layer but when I drop a blur on the effect layer it applies to both.
Anyone know who this can be done?

Blur the clone, not the source.

Then I just need to crop the effect source and move it above the clone…wow sometimes you just need one hint. Thanks!

No, I think you’ll need to make two clones – a blurred one on the bottom, a cropped one on the top. You won’t use the source at all – put it below everything else.
