4K Video/1080p render? (vids inside)
Posted by Rick Antonio on June 27, 2018 at 3:24 pmI recently shot a video in 4k using my drone and a bunch of 1080 photos.
When I rendered it in 4k (MainConcept), the results were good video and bad photos as seen here….

When I rendered it in 1080p (MPEG2 HDV 60), the results were ok video and good photos as seen here….

What can I do to get good results all around using the same timeline?

June 27, 2018 at 5:39 pmHi Rick,
Have you tried rendering with Sony AVC/MVC or MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4? If you are really down-scaling the 4K video rendering to HDV 60, is that 60i? And, why? Your 4K drone footage should be progressive, so use a codec that favors progressive and use the custom settings to match the frame rate of your 4K source media. Then when you upload to Youtube and they make their conversion (it should be less destructive), your 1080p video should look a lot better. Just my quick thought.
In case I have missed your point, could you post the properties of your source media and the exact render configuration you are using.
Best Regards……George

June 28, 2018 at 7:57 pmHey George, thanks for chiming in….
I’m not familiar with the different codecs and just used MainConcept cause it seems to be the only one I can customize for 4k.
I only recently found out I was able to do this thanks to a video on YouTube
Anyways, I tried another render in AVC HD 1080 and it seems about the same as the MPEG2 version, but still only uploads to YouTube as a 1080 video.

How would I go about rendering in a 4k format and still retain quality of the photos taken?
As for the source media:
W: 4096
H: 2160
Data Rate: 59913kbps
Total Bitrate: 59913kbps
Frame Rate: 23fpsAs for the photos (random photo chosen)
W: 5312 pixels
H: 2988 pixelsBear with me as I’m still a noob when it comes to this stuff

June 28, 2018 at 11:12 pmHi Rick,
Try this……
Make sure your project properties are set for the video source you are using, not the still shots. Although your source is 4096×2160, select either 4K 16:9 24P 4096×2304 23.976 fps, or QFHD 24P 3840×2160 23.976 fps, then you can manual set the width and height to match your source if you like. Make sure the frame rate matches your source frame rate of 23.976 fps. If you are changing a project you already started select ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’.
Add your drone footage, then a couple still shots, which should be plenty high enough resolution to achieve good results in your 4K video.
Run your project in the Preview to check the quality and make sure your preview is set for ‘Best (full)’. If your system will not run the video footage smoothly, no problem move over to check the stills and see how they appear in the preview full screen. If they appear good (they should), then make a test render.
Go ahead and use the MainConcept AVC/AAC format and select the Internet 4K 2160p template, and select ‘Customize Template’. Now change everything to match here such as the width and height and frame rate, 4096×2160 and 23.976 fps to your project settings. make sure the ‘Allow source to adjust frame size’ is unchecked, as well as, the ‘Allow source to adjust frame rate’. Make sure ‘Field Order’ is set for ‘None (progressive scan)’. Go to the ‘Project’ tab and set the ‘Video rendering quality:’ to ‘Best’.
Now run the test render and check out the results. It should be very good. If so, you can then adjust your original project to all the test settings, render it out, again viewing it for quality, then upload to Youtube. You may have to wait a while before it is available for viewing in 4K on Youtube. There used to be a delay in 4K uploads before viewers could view in 4K, so you can view in 720 or 1080 immediately, but the 4K option was delayed by an hour or so, but I’m not sure if that is still the case.
Anyway, your stills should have plenty resolution to look fine in a 4K video or QFHD video. Hope this helps. If not we need to look at something else, like turning off ‘GPU acceleration of video processing:’ in the ‘Video’ tab of ‘Preferences’.
Best Regards…..George

June 30, 2018 at 2:08 pmOK, just tried it again using the matched video settings and Main Concept AVC/AAC and it seems I still have the same problem ☹
The drone footage itself looks fine, but the transitions and photos look pixelated

June 30, 2018 at 11:29 pmHi Rick,
I need to ask a question that may help me understand better what is going on, because I may have missed this and working in the wrong direction for a solution.
Question: In the rendered file that you last posted to Youtube, were the stills pixelated on your monitor, or just when viewing on YouTube? I was going in the direction there was something happening to your video when you uploaded it to Youtube, as Youtube converts all media uploaded and sometimes does strange things to it. But after re-reading your opening post, I think this may be a rendering issue in Vegas Pro. Just want to make sure we are both working in the same direction.
When I view you video online (Youtube), I get the same results as when I view it on my system after I downloaded it. Although I only downloaded the 720 HD version, the pixelating is still there, but not in every frame, just like when I view it online. For example if you go to the 2:58:19 mark (frame number 4,287,000), the 57 Chevy 2-tone Bel-Air Nomad station wagon. From the first full frame at the end of your lead in transition, the still image looks good for 9 frames, then goes pixelated for the rest until going through the next transition, the rat rod pickup. Soon as the transition is completed on the rat rod, the image looks good for 11 frames!
Other examples I viewed, some images started out pixelated, others went 17 frames good before being pixelated, and I think there is at least one that is good through all the frames.
Now, I’m looking at a 720 HD version downloaded from Youtube and I would be extremely suspicious of this download, but I see similar result when I view your online 4K video, although I can not step through it frame at a time to be sure it is exactly the same. And of course the download is much lower resolution than your 4K original, but I am seeing the same pixelating issue comparison.
Can you upload 2 still images, and provide me with the link, so I can download them and add it to a 4K project for testing? I have 4K video footage I can use to simulate your drone footage. 2 or 3 photos should be plenty.
Thank You, and did you try turning off the GPU acceleration of video processing (Options+Preferences+Video)?
Best Regards…….George

July 1, 2018 at 3:24 amThe video files pretty much look identical to what you see on YouTube
The first vid I posted (4k render) shows excellent drone footage, but the transitions and stills are pixelated.
The second vid (MPEG2 1080) shows decent drone footage, smooth transitions and good photo quality (granted, the stills were taken by my cell phone)
Here’s a link to my car show gallery with all the photos used in the videos
https://postimg.cc/gallery/or6j5js4/
After choosing a pic, left click to enlarge, then right click to save.
I didn’t mess with the GPU setting, but I just checked and it is off.

July 1, 2018 at 2:34 pmHi Rick,
I uploaded a sample 4K video to Youtube to review, but it hasn’t posted to 4K as yet, rather 1080. When it is available in 4K I will post the link back here for you to examine.
Best Regards…..George

July 1, 2018 at 3:38 pmHi Rick,
I’m trying to duplicate your results and not having a good time with it. Everything I do comes out good. The photo and download link you provided works, but the when the photos are downloaded they are 720 HD, that is 1280×720 pixels, not the 5312×2988 pixels that you posted about previously. But even using them and upscaling the photos in PaintShopPro, or allowing Vegas Pro to upscaling them, they come out the bad pixelating in your Youtube examples.
Something else is going on here that I have yet to pin point. If I can duplicate your issue, I can work on it, but right now I have failed to get my arms around it. So, can you post some more information? Can you post a screen shot of:
– Project Properties
– Render format template and any custom settings
– A text view (using the free Mediainfo) of your drone source media
– Vegas Pro version and build number
– Type, model of your GPUHere is the sample I uploaded using the stills I downloaded from your photo library. Keep in mind, they are 720 HD upscaled to 2160, so they are probably not as sharp as you would like, but they do not have the pixelating.
BTW: Every time I view your Youtube video that tune gets stuck in my head for hours! That’s not a bad thing, as it is a nice piece, what is the title?
Best Regards…….George

July 1, 2018 at 5:05 pmThe first thing I would try is to set the timeline to 32 bit instead of 8 bit!
I will never upscale 1080 image to 4K / UHD! If you are using Sony Vegas Pro 13 and it has to be uploaded to YouTube as 4K / uhd – I would first try to Render with Sony XAVC 2160p
