  • 4k downscaled to 1080p looks worse than 1080p?

Posted by David Phelan on November 18, 2015 at 1:45 pm

I saw a number of videos online which show that 4k – 1080p looks better than shooting in 1080p.

So on my GH4, I shot some videos in 1080p and some in 4k.

I use After Effects, so I scaled down all my 4k videos to fit the 1080 timeline and exported to h.264 for Youtube.

The result: All my 1080p videos looked much sharper than my downscaled 4k.

What could I be doing wrong?

P.S. In After Effects the 4k downscaled to the 1080 timeline DOES look better than 1080 itself… but whatever happens during export, the 4k loses quality. Exporting h.264 is my only option as I upload all videos to Youtube.

    Any ideas at all?

    Thanks.

How are you exporting the videos to h264? Are you using the YouTube presets in Encoder? I would render to a CBR H264, with a high bitrate and upload – YT will re-compress that again anyway.
Also, how are you re-sizing the footage?
Do you scale in AE the 4K in a 1080 comp or are you rendering a 4k timeline to a 1080 output?

    This may be of use:

Thanks for the reply. I’ve actually seen that video already during my research on the matter. Yeah mostly I’ll just resize in AE using “fit to comp” or scale to 50% to fit the 1080p timeline.

I have tried editing in 4k timeline also and exporting as 1080.. same thing really.

I’ve kinda given up on 4k and now will more than likely use 1080 only.
