Greetings, I have 16mm (4:3) footage I would like to re-master to 16:9 widescreen. The footage is being transferred on a Rank Cinetel Scanner and will be sent to me as an avi fil on hard disc.
    How is this re-formatting accomplished.
    Thanks.

Change your project properties to widscreen (you didn’t say what the resolution that the AVI file would be but choose DV Widescreen or HD if the resolution is there). Then drop the file on the timeline, go into Pan/Crop and right-click the frame and select Match Output Aspect. This will cut off the top and bottom of the 4:3 to give you 16:9. You should now adjust the Pan/Crop to make sure you don’t cut off anyone’s head by moving the 16:9 crop up or down as needed.

    Jerry,
After applying your solution, the original 4:3 image did fill the 16:9 frame. However it appeared squashed vertically. To correct this I applied the ‘Deform’ video event FX utilizing a point four (0.4) amount of deform to correct the squashed look. Now it looks like the original 4:3 in terms of vertical height. Of course I lost top and bottom of the frame as you said would occur but the original framing was quite loose to begin with. After modifying your suggestion a bit I am quite happy with the result.
    Thanks for your help.
