3D Particles
Posted by Keith Hill on October 23, 2006 at 8:13 pmI have the Mac version of Particle Illusion 3 and am enjoying it very much.
I don’t have after effects, but use Combustion 4, Motion 2 and Cinema 4D. I notice that Trapcode Particular can operate in 3D space. Do you think that Particle Illusion will ever be capable of operating in 3D space?

October 24, 2006 at 12:51 amThe word from wondertouch is – probably, yes – eventually. But not right now. If you absolutely need 3D and you can’t fake it in pIllusion, then look into trapcode particular.
Also, AE has CC Particle World which is a 3D particle Generator that works with the AE comp camera.

I don’t have AE, but have Combustion 4 (Mac version).

October 24, 2006 at 3:31 amFor me, the larger question is when – or if – pillusion will be offered as a plug-in to After Effects. It would be a great compliment to Particular. They’re different enough that I’d like to have both in my toolbox.
It would be nice to see something from Wondertouch about the time Adobe releases the universal version of After Effects. A guy can wish, right?

October 24, 2006 at 10:15 amTrapcode particular don’t work with combustion…. I did try it… Very frustrating. I love all the trapcode plugin but particular is a … particular case… I did try it in AE and it work very well, if PI can come in the 3D universe it could be WOW!

October 24, 2006 at 10:23 amSo, what’s the difference between Particular and Particle Illusion? Is it just the 3D aspect or is there something else?

October 24, 2006 at 11:48 amparticleIllusion will be 3D in version 4.0 (probably late 2007).
pIllusion AE (the long-delayed plug-in version for After Effects) is still in development, and will probably be released early 2007. It will be based on version 3.0 of the engine.
I doubt that you’ll ever see particleIllusion working in 3D in Combustion unless Combustion’s AE plug-in support is updated so pIllusion AE will be able to work there (and once pIllusion AE uses the 4.0 engine, which as I said won’t be released until late 2007 or so).

October 24, 2006 at 11:50 amWe’re still working on pIllusion AE, and you should expect to see it early 2007 or sooner.

October 24, 2006 at 11:53 amParticleIllusion is a stand alone application with many many preset effects (1400+) out of the box.
Particular is a plug-in for AE with cosiderably less presets. However, it is in After Effects, and uses 3D.
Based on this, there are times to use one and not the other.

It’s actually over 1800. I counted (using a Search) when I built the catalog page. Feel free to check this (anybody) and let me know if I made a mistake.
