3d pan over 2d portrait
I recently saw the Kony 2012 video and I saw a nice effect that takes the whole use of 2D images to create a 3D effect. I think I know how it was done, but I don’t know if anyone here has a definite technique for this. The effect I’m talking about is at 11 mins and 22 seconds into the video: Click the short url to go directly to the effect https://goo.gl/DZDlw or click on the YouTube video and scroll to 11:22.

Note that the tracking is very smooth and it really makes the portrait look like a real 3D render as opposed to a flat image in 3D space. If anyone has any ideas, I’d love to hear them.

Walter already pointed you in the right direction. You can follow my tutorial that uses Free Form, but for more accurate results in 3d displacement and faster renders, FreeForm Pro is the way to go.
