Ok– here’s the setup. I’ve got a bunch of 3d layers moving in space, and I’m using alpha mattes to mask a lot of the layers. The problem I’m having is that while the alpha mattes are obscuring the layers themselves, they’re not obscuring the shadows cast by the 3d light source. Is there a fix for this? I’d prefer not to have to mask out the layers using actual masks.

    1) duplicate your shadow-casting layers
    2) set each copy’s Shadow Casting material option to Cast Shadows Only
    3) use your track matte trick on these shadow layers
