I am trying to make 3D glass text shatter in After Effects. I created 3D glass text following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGqz1ADlkUI

This tutorial creates the text in Ray Traced 3D.

Now I am trying to animate it shattering. I was following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd_gbUNjjn8

When add the Shatter effect to the text, it doesn’t do anything.

Can anyone suggest how I may be able to do this, or point me in the direction of a youtube tutorial.

You would need to precompose your 3d text and apply shatter to the precomp.

It won’t look good though. You’ll lose all the refractive qualities you were just enjoying. Now, you could use normal AE tricks to fake the glass look (using CC Glass, for example) on a shattering layer and skip the ray-traced renderer entirely.

If you have CC, a better solution might be to create your text in Cinema 4d (which comes free with AE) and do the work there.

If you have CC, the ray traced renderer isn’t really a thing anymore. I mean, it’s still there, but the direction they went with creating 3d stuff in AE is Cinema 4D and it’s practically better in almost every way, except that you have to jump back and forth. If you want to use it and it works for you, then that’s awesome, but I’m not sure tutorials for it are really going to be of interest for many people.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do what you’re passionate about and if this is what you want to do, keep doing it. I’m only mentioning this to encourage you to think about what your viewers might want.

I have After Effects CC 2015. I am going to use the Cinema 4D that is built in.

I found a link explaining how to do it here:

    Thank you
