I am currently a broadcast designer – mainly work with after effects and combustion – and I am in a position now to get involved in 3D – get training and suggest a software for the company to buy. I chose Maya, but I need help on my necessities – do I need unlimited? do I need renderman? I won’t be doing character animation, but need nice refractions/reflexions. Please help! thanks!

I am also currently doing broadcast graphics and was in your situation a couple of years ago. I too choose Maya and settled for Complete, simply because of the cost. I now have Unlimited and haven’t really used the or the fur/hair features for what I am doing. The only features I have used is the Cloth simulator and simple fluid effects, though not for character animation. That is not to say that I won’t use the other features in the future for broadcast, but it is nice to have and to learn. As my skill set improves with Maya, I’m sure I’ll eventually include these other features in future projects.

Maya ships with a mental ray liscence node and all the cool reflections, refractions and caustics can all be done with MR. Renderman, as amazing as its renders are, seems to be overkill for Broadcast. However, I haven’t used it and don’t proclaim myself as a Maya or Renderman expert and have found that Maya (out of box) meets and sometimes exceeds the expectations for all the work I have done to date.
