  • 3D Flat Line .. HOW?! (Also Particular Question)

    Hey..

Just wondering if anyone can give me any insight as to how this is done… Please check out the “Spring Reel 2006” at: https://www.charlieco.tv/

About a quarter of the way into the Reel there is a segment with “Dubline” written on the screen and there are 3D flat lines animating on and off the screen… How is this done? I’ve tried to achive this using the “Light Streaks” method with particular but couldn’t get the lines to look flat and 3D…

Also, does anyone know how to make the Particular Plugin make the Organic Lines preset fly straight at the camera in Z Space as opposed to just straight across or up and down the screen? …when you select this preset and do a preview camera animation in the effects box you can rotate the camera and make it do so, I just can’t figure out how to make it happen on the stage…

A big thanks for any advice!

The 3D flat lines were probably done with a 3D app like Maya, Lightwave or Cinema4D. Mylenium has a tutorial on how to do them in Maya. I think there’s a tutorial called 3D ribbons done in After Effects but they don’t look as cool and are much harder to pull off than those done in 3D. As for your particular question, I think there is an option to Use Comp Camera that will solve your problem.

Just create a camera layer in the composition, Particular automatically uses the camera information. Make sure that Particular is on a 2D layer, it handles the 3D calculations internally.

Otherwise you could probably alter the direction the emitter is facing, or the motion path if that’s involved, I haven’t looked at the preset.

Mylenium has a tutorial on how to do the iPod effect here, but the one that I think you are referring to (showing how to do 3D ribbons in Maya and C4D) is here:

Also, Check out Zaxwerks new Plug-in, 3D warps:

This can help you do it directly in AE, but I can’t say with how much ease.

Actually, Chad Briggs did our ribbon tutorial for Maya:
