3D Engraving into a cylinder
I’m sure this has been covered somewhere, and if so please point me in the right direction, but I have yet to find an answer that solves my issue. In Adobe Illustrator 6, is there a way to design a solid cylinder and then engrave text into it? So when you rotate the cylinder for different viewing angles, the text retains the correct 3 dimensional appearance in the cylinder.

I don’t have Illustrator 6, but as I recall, this worked already before that:
1) Convert your text to a symbol
2) Revolve a rectangle to a cylinder and
3) Map the symbol to the face of the cylinder

Thanks Kalle, but that was not what I am looking for. I am looking for a way to partially or completely have the text go through the object. Like this.

No, not possible in Illustrator. You need to model it in a 3D modeling software.

Thank you Kalle. Is there a particular 3d modeling software that you recommend? If so, can I design it in vector?

The price of Blender can’t be beat — it’s free.
Getting a piece of vector art into Blender is not necessarily simple, so using the built-in tools might be a better approach.
