3D Communication Pipe…
Hi,
I’m not too sure where to post this. Basically kind of just out of interest I’d like to have a go at creating a 3d pipe to create the effect of going from one computer to another but not really sure where to start.
I have available to me: After Effects, FCP Studio, 3DS Max and Avid Media Composer. I’m pretty savvy with AE and 3DS but I can’t really think of a good way to start.
Does anybody reckon I could do it with any of this software or should i be looking at something more powerful? Anyone know of any tutorials or a starting place?

It somewhat depends on what you want to do with this 3D pipe. Will there be a camera traveling down the pipe from one computer to the other, following a data stream? In that case, I’d do it in 3DS Max using a tube primitive and a particle system for the data. If you just want a 3D “looking” pipe that you never see into or travel through, you could accomplish it with shapes and gradient fills in AE. With a true 3D program like Max, you could even do a cutaway pipe that shows the data flowing from computer to computer. There’s also a wealth of free models out there (Turbosquid.com has many) of computers and all sorts of technology. You’ll need to know a bit more than the basics of Max to get the job done, but it will be a good test of your skills, and there are thousands of tutorials on the web to help you achieve the goal.
By outputting RLA or RPF files out of Max, you can send the camera data to AE, giving you the ability to make your AE side of things match the Max camera. Good luck!
