Activity Forums Adobe After Effects 3d card

I’m trying to create a 3d version of a card. I have the front side as a layer and the back side as a layer rotated 180 on the y axis.

I linked the layers position, orientation, etc. together using a pick whip. when I rotated the card, I got the reverse of the front side of the card. I edited the expression to offset the front cards z postion by + .01. Now when I rotate the card, can see the reverse up ’til about 315 degrees and then it abruptly switches to the backside of the front card.

This is my first AE project, so I am probably overlooking something simple. Any suggestions?

What version of AE are you using?

In older versions of AE, there’s a problem with the standard 3D renderer that could cause this type of problem. If you have 5.0 or newer, go into the Comp settings > Advanced tab, and make sure the Rendering Plug-in is on Advanced 3D.

Otherwise, make sure the anchor points on both layers are positioned identically. If one layer is rotating around a different anchor point, that could cause the problem.

Also- when you say that you’re using the pickwhip, are you parenting the layers or are you applying an expression?

I was applying expressions. Realized I could do the entire layer I just needed to increase the offset on the z-axis a little more. I went with .1 instead of .01 and everything works much better.

I’ll check the advanced 3D setting as well.

    Thanks for the advice

Also note you could probably have done this more simply by parenting one side to the other.
