We’re shooting on 35 MM and transfering to DVCam with the strandard
    ALE/FLEX files.

We’re trying to figure out if we cut 29.97 or to use the Easy Set-Up
    Cinema Tools 23.98 setting.

If we go 23.98 what’s the process of importing the ALE files? Do we
have to run them through Cinema Tools are can we just import the ALE
files? Also, what capure and sequence setting do we use

    We’re running 5.1.4.

    Many thanks.

There is a lot to consider when working with a project shot on film. Are you finishing on film? Are you finishing to video? If the latter, then you don’t even have to use Cinema Tools, and you can digitize into Final Cut like you would with any other video project. If you are finishing to film, and you need Cinema Tools to track your video edits’ relationship to the physical film, then you need to have a clear understanding of the technical complexities of this process.

If I were you, I would study the Cinema Tools Manual VERY closely. Read it a couple of times and gain a clear understanding of what you’re doing. THEN get into your editing. This is a process that you cannot afford to mess up along the way.

    Best of luck.

Well I desperately need the same answers of the question asked above. I will study the cinema tools manual very closely but isn’t there a standard workflow that summarizes it?

Yes. There are workflow examples in the manual. If you tell me the specifics of your project, I would be happy to offer more advice.

You need to know how you are finishing to understand how to start!

Basically, import flex files, which have film edge code to timecode relationships. This creates a Cinema Tools data base, with one record for each flex file record.

    Capture from DVCAM at 29.97.

Then, if you are editing at 24 or 23.97, reverse telecine to those speeds (undo the field processing which happened during telecine.)

Link your quicktime files to the cinema tools data records.

Edit, then when done create cutlists if you are cutting negative. This process takes the info on what frames you used in your cut (based on that linked quicktime file) and uses the Cinema Tools database to figure out what film edge codes those portion relate to.

Finish the movie by exporting what you need to the lab and to sound.

** Decide now you will finish picture and sound, and then work backwards to design your work flow. **

Example: I chose a rocket, and I wonder if it will take me to the moon OR I need to go to the moon, so what type of rocket will get me there.

I work with Pal system. Someone showed me the way how it’s done. You import flex files in Cinematolls then export it as batch list. Then import that batch list inside FCP and capture. And if you wanna edit 24 you choose all clips then go to tools and chose “conform 25- 24″ and choose a sequence preset ” DV Pal 25 @24” then edit….So here What I need to know is For each lab roll,so that for each flex file , should I open a new data-base? Other thing is that The lab is asking “cmx 3600 edl” instead of cit list. Why? Thank you very much..
