35mm Anamorphic Trailer from 16:9 SD uncompressed source
Hi,
I have to create a 35mm anamorphic trailer from Anamorphic 16:9 SD 10-bit uncompressed 4:2:2 source material. Here’s the workflow I’m considering.
PHASE 1 – GET 24FPS SD MATERIAL
1. Edit in FCP in a 29.97 FPS sequence using the SD material and get it to a rough stage where I know I have all the material I need.2. Export a reference QT from FCP
3. Import this QT into AE and do an inverse telecine – since sequence is edited and there’s black in between clips – the cadence will be all over the place. I’m hoping AE 7.0 will be able to identify the changing cadence and then do the inverse telecine leaving me with a 24FPS version of the source QT.
PHASE 2 – EDIT 24FPS SD TRAILER
4. Bring back inverse telecine’d reference QT into a 23.98 FPS Anamorphic SD sequence in FCP, bring in audio as well (it should be in sync…?)5. Do a fine edit – leaving gaps for effects / text animation to be done in AE.
PHASE 3 – FINISH 24FPS 2.35 ASPECT RATIO TRAILER IN AE
6. Now export this QT into AE into a composition that will be for 2.35 aspect ratio (theatrical anamorphic)7. The sequence will not fill up the frame – and I don’t want to stretch the SD image – so add a background, add effects/text, and then export it as a 24FPS Image file sequence to deliver to lab to shoot out to 35mm film.
The assumption is that the audio will stay in sync through all of this, and I can just export the audio track for using in the optical soundtrack.
Any thoughts or feedback – which of the above steps are possible/not possible? Any caveats? A better way to do this?
Can I use AE with the Algolith suite perhaps to do this in a better way? Any other software recommendation that’d make this all go smoothly?
