30fps to 29.97 Conform for Old 5D footage
Posted by David Michael on May 11, 2011 at 5:32 pmOK, so I posted a topic about this on here a while back, but hit a wall in my troubleshooting. I’ve made some great strides since then and wanted to follow up with some questions.
My problem is that old-5D video loses sync past 3 minutes with externally recorded audio.
My diagnostic was to change the audio speed to 99.9% – this worked to fix the sync issue! So this is that same traditional problem that we all used to have to deal with.
Now my course of action to fix it globally is to try and conform everything to 29.97, which ought to slow down the video track so that it matches the audio. I ran a Cinema Tools batch on a test copy of all my project files and Final Cut now recognizes them as 2997 videos. I stick them into a new and proper sequence with their synced audio, and nothing is different. I’ve got the same slip issue.
Am I missing a step?
Thanks for the advice.

With FCP it’s all about how you import the audio in the first place which is determined by the easy setup. You do not need to change the speed of your audio as one second is one second in audio land and there’s no fps. There can be tc, but it does not determine the speed of the audio. Read on for more:

May 11, 2011 at 8:13 pmThank you. This has been an excellent read for me – not definitively the answer yet, but I’m now testing some of those methods and will get back to you with some questions when they come up.

The first thing you should have done is import the audio with an 30.0 FPS easy setup (select the easy setup, quit fcp, repoen fcp, then import the audio). This way the audio gets stamped as 30.0 tc.
Edit.
Then you need to conform audio and video together.
Now you have to fix it in XML.

May 11, 2011 at 9:14 pmYep, you’re dead on, this is the case. After running a test XML, it seems to fix the problem.
Only problem now is it gives me an error when I try to open the xml saying:
<timecode>: <string> and <frame> mismatched. Data defined in <string> element will be used.( line 222 )If I can figure that out I think these issues can be resolved. Any ideas?

May 11, 2011 at 9:38 pmThis probably means there’s a mismatch between the actual tc and frame rate, but that’s a guess.
Did the XML import ok?

May 11, 2011 at 9:44 pmIt did, except on my test clip the audio was cut off at the end perhaps due to this timecode/frame number mismatch. I wonder if there is anything I can do to eliminate that error?

May 12, 2011 at 4:53 amThanks for looking into this with me. Here is the unmodified text of the xml. I’ll post the actual file in the morning if this won’t do.

May 12, 2011 at 4:03 pmOK here is the XML file. It is of all the synced files in my project before any changes. https://f1.creativecow.net/file/2327/2327_tofix.xml.zip
Some things I have discovered: the frame tag denotes the total number of frames and the string tag is a timecode number. Both of these are dependent on the TC rate that I am trying to change, so it makes sense that they are giving an error.
The result of the error is that if I am trying to change these parameters on one of my merged clips, the audio shifts unpredictably requiring me to resync everything.
If I export a sequence and an XML, it seems to work better, with only a few items being totally mismatched audio/video-wise.
Let me know your thoughts.
